Communication satellites account for more than 80% of satellites present in space, more than 80% of applications configured around satellites and more than 80% of the budget spent on development of satellite technology as a whole. This chapter focuses on modulation and demodulation techniques and multiplexing techniques for communication satellites. A brief outline on the three types of information signals–voice signals, data signals and voice signals–are presented in the chapter. A brief overview of amplitude modulation (AM) is given as it can be used to modulate individual voice channels. The chapter discusses frequency modulation (FM), pulse communication systems and the Shannon–Hartley theorem, which underlines the fundamental importance of bandwidth and signal‐to‐noise ratio in communication. Three well‐known digital modulation techniques namely, amplitude shift keying, frequency shift keying and phase shift keying, and frequency division multiplexing and time division multiplexing are also explained in the chapter.
