An internal combustion engine uses air and fuel, often based on hydrocarbons, to produce power and emissions. To characterize and analyze the engine and its performance and energy conversion process, a set of relationships and parameters are defined. These parameters describe the air and fuel mixtures and also the engine geometry and performance measures, which are discussed in this chapter. Engine downsizing achieves reduced loss through reduced engine size. The main virtue of having a small engine is that it has better efficiency at road loads than a larger one, which is due to the fact that a smaller engine operates closer to maximum load where the engine has its best efficiency. Through an increased air density, the amount of air inducted into the cylinder can be increased. Supercharging is often used on downsized engines to give fuel economy benefits.
