A wide range of innovative applications are enabled by wireless communications, allowing vehicles to connect with each other, the roadside network infrastructure, and the Internet. Connected vehicle applications are classified into the following categories: hard safety, soft safety, mobility, and convenience applications. Most vehicles in a consumer vehicle network (CVN) belong to individual consumers. With vehicle‐to‐vehicle (V2V) local broadcast, a vehicle sends messages to all other vehicles within its communication range. Many mobility and convenience applications require the vehicle‐to‐infrastructure (V2I) bidirectional communications mode. Several existing wireless technologies support vehicle communications. Short‐range radios include Bluetooth, Wi ‐ Fi, and dedicated short‐ range communications (DSRC). Long‐range radios include cellular networks, satellite services, and digital radio broadcast networks. The wireless technology implemented in a vehicle can become outdated while the vehicle is still on the road.
