Reconnaissance and surveillance are the most common missions for a UAV. They usually are accomplished using electro‐optical or infrared imaging sensors. The ability of these sensors to detect objects of interest and to distinguish one type of object from another (a person from an animal or a truck from a car) depends on their resolution and the “noisiness” of the image. The basic concepts of imaging‐sensor analysis allows the determination of the sensor characteristics required to achieve detection, recognition, and identification of objects as a function of range, target signature, and atmospheric conditions.
