Plug‐in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) have the potential to displace transportation fuel consumption by using grid electricity to drive the car. PHEVs can be driven initially using electric energy stored in the onboard battery, and onboard gasoline engine can extend the driving range. There are two types of PHEV: extended range electric vehicle, and blended mode PHEV. Although EREV can be driven electrically with a charged battery, the overall efficiency may prevent the vehicle to operate in pure electric mode due to the large losses associated with the battery and propulsion motor at high power demands. Hence, blended mode PHEV can reduce the overall cost and increase the battery pack energy density. Converting a HEV to a PHEV involves the replacement of the battery pack or adding an extra battery pack, as well as modifying the vehicle control. The PHEV conversion is discussed in detail. Vehicles equipped with a bidirectional charger can be integrated with the utility grid to serve as backup energy storage, help control the grid stability, etc.
