Probability of occurrence and severity are not used to calculate a risk value in ISO 26262, but are estimated separately and combined with controllability to determine an automotive safety integrity level (ASIL). The risk determined as a result of the system operating as intended, including misuse, is evaluated using the methods in ISO PAS 21448. In general, automotive safety‐related systems do not have a direct potential to cause harm themselves. Inadvertent actuation of a steering system does not directly cause harm to the occupants of the vehicle or to other road users. Limiting exposure to dangerous situations is one way to reduce the risk potential of an automotive system. The evaluation of situations where harm may occur, which is performed to determine exposure rankings for the ASIL used in functional safety, is also useful when determining scenarios used in validation for safety of the intended function (SOTIF)‐related systems.
