Modern and upcoming cars embrace different kinds of hardware and software architectures in one cyber-physical system with mixed safety criticality. Hypervisors can be used to recover safety critical tasks of such systems in case of a severe fault and thus help to increase their availability. This paper evaluates different types of hypervisor technologies for such strategies in heterogeneous automotive real-time systems, namely Qemu and Jailhouse. It is shown, that both are suitable to recover a system in a reasonable time frame under certain conditions. Both provide different features. For instance, Jailhouse is able to provide a high level of freedom from interference, whereas Qemu is able to emulate various processor architectures.
