This paper addresses some of the notable improvements in the durability of concrete for bridge structures, mainly decks, and of pavements by the Virginia Department of Transportation since 1938. These improvements are intended to extend service life with minimal maintenance. Improvements have been made in the design, material ingredients, proportioning, and construction practices for bridge structures and concrete pavements.
