The application of a “long-lasting” asphalt mixture was studied in this paper. The performance of asphalt mixtures made of three types of binders (unmodified, modified styrene–butadiene–styrene, and modified long-lasting) was evaluated through a series of laboratory tests and test road investigations. Both conventional asphalt test methods and Super-pave® PG test methods were employed to evaluate the performance of the three binders. Three types of gradations were employed to make the mixtures. The splitting, dynamic modulus, wheel-tracking, and repeated-load permanent-deformation tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the mixtures. The low-temperature performance was also evaluated to verify the applicability of the long-lasting mixture. The mechanical performance of the mixture was evaluated in relation to the amount of improvement the long-lasting asphalt mixture offered compared with the other types of mixtures. On the basis of the laboratory study, test roads with different pavement structures were constructed and investigated after 1 year of service. Laboratory test results showed that the mixture made of the modified PG 82-22 long-lasting binder, which demonstrated good properties for tensile strength and high-temperature stability, exhibited 25% higher splitting strength and better rutting resistance. Investigation of test roads showed that the pavement rutting resistance was improved significantly by using the long-lasting asphalt mixture in the pavement structures, especially in the intermediate layer. The long-lasting asphalt mixture was recommended for use in heavy traffic, in high-temperature areas, and on steel bridge decks because of its excellent rutting resistance and good mechanical properties.
