The current focus on extreme event loading of structures requires a better understanding of the performance of full-scale deep foundation systems, especially at large deflections. Recently, innovative loading systems such as the Osterberg cell, the Statnamic device, and linear inertial mass vibrators and their clever applications have permitted testing of much larger foundations to failure than was possible in the past and have allowed for tests to be performed at rates of loading that closely replicate the loading events being modeled. Examples of applications of those systems are described, and exceptional recent loading tests of deep foundation systems are documented.
