During the past five years, the development of tools and materials to support intelligent transportation systems (ITS) education at university and professional levels has experienced tremendous growth. With the rapid advancement of educational technologies, there is an eagerness to develop new ways to impart ITS knowledge. A survey of state departments of transportation was performed to identify the needs for ITS education and assess the potential for delivery of this material through educational technology. A review of pertinent literature related to adult learning and its implications was conducted. Recommendations to guide the design of educational materials are presented. A taxonomy designed to aid ITS professionals in identifying available educational materials by competency area, knowledge acquisition needs, and available resources is proposed.
