Local truckload trucking plays a major role in the freight transportation industry. In operations in which travel times, loading and unloading times, and waiting times at intermodal and customer facilities are stochastic, deterministic assignment methods can perform poorly. Efficient stochastic assignment models could provide significant benefits. Techniques for developing assignments that explicitly incorporate stochastic elements of the problem have been explored. Several alternative assignment models to take into account both time windows and stochastic service times have been proposed.
