A great deal of information has been published in recent years on the development and performance of the new standard installation direct design (SIDD) procedures for designing and installing concrete pipe. National standards organizations such as AASHTO, ASCE, and ASTM have developed new specifications to address these performance revisions necessitated by the new SIDD beddings. Most of the work by these organizations has concentrated on embankment installations. The challenge that currently exists is the practical application of these new standards by the specifying community, contractors, and manufacturers into common place installations, which are typically trenches. Guidelines on developing these new SIDD procedures for practical applications in trench conditions are provided.
