Reduction of vehicle weight has become significant during the last years. The motivation forces to these efforts are lowering fuel consumption and reducing emissions. Because simultaneously the number of additional equipment for passengers convenience in cars steadily increases, lighter body components for weight compension have to be introduced. Intensive R&D activities succeeded in optimised standard and new advanced high-strength steel grades with improved forming behaviour. The tensile strength and formability range of available steel grades can be widenden by bainitic, martensitic and multi phase steels (e.g. DP, TRIP) to a high extent. Therefore these steels are suitable for complex parts, as demonstrated with component examples which in combination with the chosen joining and application techniques represent optimised solutions for the in service behaviour. Thereby weight is reduced, structures have been simplified and costs are saved.
