The present work, observation, and analysis of cyclic polarization curves of nitrogen-bearing alloys has led to an improvement in the pitting corrosion resistance, attributed to the presence of higher amounts of nitrogen and molybdenum. Selective dissolution of iron took place on the nitrogen-bearing stainless steels, and caused enrichment of chromium in the passive film, which in turn improved the corrosion resistance of the alloys. Hence, the higher nitrogen- and molybdenum-containing stainless steels can be a cost-effective substitute for the currently-used 316L SS in a critical environment such as seawater.
