A non destructive method of quality inspection for spot welds has been developed, evaluated, and implemented in manufactoring based upon the pulse-echo approach the method uses the transit time and attenuation of the echoes in the weld zone to classify the weld quality in automative industry. It is the only proven method for detection of highly fused stick welds. By using highly damped, hight-frequency transducer (20 Mhz), the method is applicable to inspection of spot welds in very thin-gage sheet metal as thin as 0.8 mm. A novel soft-tip captive-water-column transducer delay is used that permits adequate coupling to the usually nonflat surfaces of production welds. The method has proven its cost effectiveness through the significant cost savings from elimination of test part destruction. Additional benefits have been facilitated inspection of more welds, possibility to be close the welding machine, in the way to provide quick feed back for improved process control.
