Joint studies between Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and Pipeline Integrity International's (PII) have allowed a 138-km long, 24-in diameter, PDO crude oil pipeline to be inspected, and international axial slot-shaped corrosion defects to be successfully detected and accurately sized. Confirmed the effectiveness of the epoxy shell for repairing the above defect type. In particular an experimental study was designed to confirm: (a) the strength and modulus of the epoxy grout used in the pipeline repair system are not significantly affected by contact with a particular sample of Oman crude oil containingb hydrogen sulphide, or with water, even after immersion for a three month period at elevated pressures of up to 91 bar, (b) results from this work confirm that an oil or water pipeline containing this sleeve repair, and subsequently developing a small through-wall defect, or possibly larger defects, can withstand internal pressures (static or cyclic) without loss of sealing integrity. It may be feasible to develop a means of quantifying pressures and defect dimensions, above which leakage is likely to occur in different diameters of pipe, along with possible time dependency, (c) following on from these studies, 25 epoxy shell repairs have been successfully applied to deep narrow-width defects on the 24-in pipeline as part of an overall rehabilitation programme.
