Principle forgings used for constructions of big ships are forgings of propeller shafts, rudder stocks, free forged connection rods and crankshafts. Propeller shafts are very long often more than 20 meters. Current rudder stocks are mostly designed straight, forging of bent stocks is also possible. Connection rods for ship engines usually weight several tons and they are characterised by big differences in their cross sections. Crankshafts for low speed ship engines are of semibuilt design composed of forged parts. Chemical composition of steel is often adjusted just to satisfy required mechanical properties. In that connection, Vitkovice tries to comply with requirements of world standards. The production of big crankshafts has a long tradition in the company, and more than 2000 pieces of this commodity have already been produced. Currently the production of this kind of crankshafts makes out 20 % of the total world production.
