Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, Foundry and Forge Division is playing a vital role in modern India and supporting requirements of aircrafts, helicopters, aero engines, aerospace and accessory manufacturing activities. The capacity and expertise built-up over the years are also being effectivily utilised to cater to requirements of other defence organisations, aerospace, public sector undertakings and private industries. Rapid industrialisation has thrown several challenges for Indian foundry in production of complicated castings. This has resulted in indigenous R&D activities and acquiring latest technologies to compete with the developed countries. The Foundry and Forge division is currently engaged in the development and production of several aeronautical quality castings of different alloys. The castings for aeronautical applications are generally thin walled with very close dimensional tolerances subjected to several destructive and non-destructive tests. The paper deals with the various technological aspects and experience gained in the manufacture of a large size and extremely complicated magnesium alloy casting used for aerospace applications.
