Corrosion protection of offshore platforms is different in relation to the part's position respect to the sea level. Dipped zones are typically protected by cathodic protection with impressed current or sacrificial anodes. The emerged parts and those on the tidal and splash zone are protected by high thickness organic coatings. A new sacrificial anode with composite structure has been studied. This anode is made by casting an Al-alloy onto a steel support. Then, an external skin of Mg-alloy is cast. The surface Mg provides the high initial currents needed. Later, Al offers cathodic protection for the rest of structure life, already polarized and covered with a good calcareous layer. The performance of the new anode was verified with laboratory tests and on offshore structures. Also several types of organic protective coatings (mono- and multilayer) habe been tested by elctrochemical testing, salt spray testing and UV-radiation.
