Materials with low melting temperature like Al and Cu can be joined with a novel process - Friction Stir Welding. The process has been proven to offer excellent results with good repeatability covering bending, tensile and fatigue endurance tests. Even Al-alloys difficult to arc weld has been forged together with the new process. The first commercial installation in the world for welding Al-shippanels up to (6x16) m with material thickness (3-15) mm is just put into operation in Norway. There are many other suitable applications for the Friction Stir Welding process in e.g. automotive, defence, railway and offshore industries.
