JWL automotive wheel impact strength was examined by FEM (finite element method) analysis. Typical aluminium wheels of various disk dimensions were analyzed. It was found that impact strength was characterized by rim flange thickness and spoke rigidity when rim flange failure occured. To prove this, impacte tests on forged aluminium wheels were performed, and the effect of disk dimension on strength was investigated. Based on these investigations it was shown that rim flange failure strength could be improved by drecreasing spoke rigidity.
