Experimental studies on high temperature solutionizing and related variations of the microstructures and mechanical properties of the A356 and aluminium casting alloy have been carried out. The studies were mainly achieved in view of an improvement in tensile properties and Charpy impact fracture toughness of the A356 casting alloy and related alloys having different silicon contents. An extended and an accelerated solutioning of the Mg2Si into the matrix was confirmed by the measurement of the variations of the resistivity and lattice constants for the A356 casting alloy and silicon content regulated alloy specimens solutionized at higher temperatures as compared to JIS (Japan Industrial Standard) specified temperature. The amounts of the solutionized phases were estimated to have increased by about 8 % than the specimens treated at usual solutioning temperature. The specimens comprising about 2 mass% of silicon showed an enough tensile strength and higher elongation to fracture and absorbed energy by about 20 to 55 % higher as compared to those of the specimens with standard silicon content of about 7 mass% and solutionized at JIS specified temperatures.
