Tests in hot chlorinated sea waters have been performed at two sea water laboratories to compare the corrosion resistance of the 7Mo superaustenitic stainless steel 654 SMO with that of the 6Mo stainless steel 254 SMO and the nickel base alloys 625 and C-276. 654 SMO was much more resistant to crevice and pitting corrosion than 254 SMO and at least as resistant as the best nickel base alloy. Continuous chlorination results in appreciably more corrosive conditions than intermittent chlorination. If the continuous chlorination is preceded by a period with intermittent chlorination, the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel will increase.
