The main factors which make sea water a very corrosive fluid can be divided into two groups: (bio)chemical (such as oxygen, carbonate, salts, organic compounds, biochemical activity and pollutants), and physical (temperature, flow velocity, potential, pressure and light). MIC (microbiologically influenced corrosion) in stainless steels acts usually via the depolarisation of the oxygen reduction process. The presence of a bacterial mass implies the production of extracellular polymeric substances and bioproducts, which act as catalyst of the oxygen reduction. In offshore systems, stainless steels are mainly used for hydraulic sea water handling systems. To avoid fouling, the water is usually treated with biocides (mostly chlorine), using intermittent of low-level continuous regimes. The effect of chlorine concentration is of great importance for both chemical and biological corrosion: if chlorine is used for bacterial control and not added within tight limits it can promote localised corrosion. The antifouling procedures based on biocides often cause additional problems related to environmental impacts, law restrictions and safety. In this paper, a short review is presented of the different biocide options more commonly used in the offshore industry for the antifouling of stainless steel piping and components.
