Over the years, the demand for oxygen for many electric arc furnaces has increased steadily from 400 to now over 1200 cubic feet/t. It is critical that this oxygen be reliably supplied at the required flow, pressure and purity. The industrial gas industry has continued to improve the economics and the reliability of oxygen supply systems through a number of advances. The development of on-site systems with liquid back-up systems, the continuous improvement of on-site supply system designs, and the proactive operation and maintenance of these systems. A major step forward to reduce the costs of the former solely cryogenic on-site oxygen supply systems was the introduction of the vacuum pressure swing adsorption, of course after a period of reduction operating problems of this new technologies.
