Based on the lognormal random process model for the crack growth rate and a second order approximation, a simple stachastic crack growth analysis method is presented. The probability of crack exceedance and the distribution of service time to reach any crack size are obtained in a simple closed-form solution. The method can easily be implemented for practical applications using available deterministic crack growth results for the median crack growth curve and estimates of both the crack growth rate dispersion and the correlation time. Since the correlation parameter of the crack growth rate is taken into account, the analysis method is flexible enough to cover a wide range of dispersion characteristics in predicting the stochastic crack growth accumulation. This paper addresses only the aspect of stochastic crack propagation. In addition to the statistical dispersion of the crack growth rate, the statistical dispersion of the initial flaw size is very significant and it should be accounted for in the reliability analysis of structural or mechanical components. Given the distribution of the initial flaw size, mehtodologies to account for both the crack growth variability and the initial flaw size variability have been available in the literature for example (J.N.Yang and S. Chen J. Aircraft, AIAA 2f2, 415-422 (1985); J.N. Yang and S. Chen, J. Propulsion and Power, AIAA 2, 38-49 (1986); Probabilistic Fracture Mechanics and Reliability edited by J.W. Provan, The Hague (1994)). However, the technology for establishing the initial flaw size distribution is still a subject of research (J.N. Yang, S..D. Manning, J.L. Rudd and R.M. Bader, Proc. Int. committee on Aeronoutical Fatigue, Melbourne, Australia (May 1995)).
