Results from a series of electrochemical tests performed on a range of duplex and austenitic stainless steels in seawater inoculated with sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) are presented. The materials included in the study are a superduplex UNS S32760, a superaustenitic UNS S31254, two duplexes UNS S31803 and a 25 % Cr and as a standard, the austenitic UNS S31603. Under anaerobic conditions, a culture of SRB was maintained and over varying periods, of up to six months, the corrosion behaviour of the materials was studied using electrochemical anodic polarisation tests supported by light and scanning-electron microscopy. In the presence of active SRB, all the grades of stainless steel were found to be vulnerable to corrosion in much shorter time periods and involving more-varied, complex modes of attack than is the case in normal, aerated seawater.
