This paper reviews recent developments in high-strength sheet steels (HSS) in Japan and the application of these steels in the automotive industry. Items discussed include formability requirements in HSS for automobile parts, metallurgical considerations in optimizing the relationship between strength and ductility, processing and characteristics of newly developed HSS, weldability and fatigue properties of HSS, and future trends of HSS in Japan. This article is translated in Russian too.
