High strength weldable steels (HSWS) offer easely identified advantages in truck body manufacture, primarily through their ability to reduce dead weight while increasing payload. Four HSWS used in the manufacture of a 75-ton dump truck are described. These include conventionally alloyed as well as microalloyed quenched and tempered grades. Microalloying principles are discussed in light of way these apply in the subject steels. Additional discussions are included on the effects of nonmetallic inclusions on ductility and toughness and the origins of the superior weldability displayed by the HSWS. A brief synopsis of the microstructural features of HSWS is also given. This article is translatedin English too.
