This article is translated in English. Modern automobile production is characterized by rising trends in the selection of new materials, as well as advances in computer-assisted design methods. The interaction of these two factors places greater requirements on materials suppliers to provide automotive designers with thorough documentation on the properties, advantages and limitations of new products. This is especially pertinent in the case of steels. This paper describes a selection of materials and processes in which materials requirements are particulary critical and in which advances will strongly influence automotive production in the near future. These include coated sheet steels with enhanced properties, forging steels, sintered powder metallurgy products as well as conventionally rolled steels. The need for improved communication between steelmakers and automotive producers is stressed.
