The importance of materials in developing new and improved aerospace systems for the twenty-first century is discussed. Both airframe and engine applications are presented with examples drawn from both monolithic and composite metals, polymers, and ceramics. It is proposed that we have left the Basic Materials Age and are now in the Era of Engineered Materials.
