A new method of rapid solidification of specific aluminum alloys followed by conventional forming processes allows the production of components for higher temperature applications as described in this article. The rapidly solidified Al-Fe-V-Si alloys developed by Allied-Signal have been shown to possess superior baseline mechanical properties including desirable strengths at temperature, modulii, fracture toughness and fatigue properties. In addition depending on the application, there is the ability to trade strength at temperature for fracture toughness. This is accomplished by adjusting the volume fraction of silicides and the iron to vanadium ratio. The corrosion resistance of these alloys is excellent.
