To document the complete vacuum furnace process of an aerospace heat treating manufacturer of an economic multi-channel, microprocessor-based recorder was desired. This article describes the application and the selection of a hybrid multipoint recorder/logger (Esterline Angus Instrument Corp., Indianapolis, IN) to provide the specific documentation required by the vacuum furnace manufacturer (Vacuum Furnace Systems, Souderton, PA). Figs. 1 and 2 illustrate the facility used for documentation - the vacuum furnace for thermal processing and the control panel including the multipoint recorder/loggers. The new process recording capability of the MRL is believed to be the best available, according to VFS, for heat treating facilities where documentation is essential to assure that special treatments are performed to specifications. The metals mentioned above do require this type of documentation in thermal processing. Because of the flexibility built into the MRL, all of the previously listed needs could be met. Versatility of this instrumentation allows setups to meet operating requirements and when requirements change, adaptability to the new process.
