Aluminum alloys such as 2036, 5182 and 6009 are presently used for auto body panels, as they have strength comparable to low-carbon steels. However, the formability of the alloys is inferior to that of the steels. Kobe Steel has recently developed both G4B, which has high formability, and KS6183, which has high strength after baking. Among aluminum alloys used for auto body panels, G4B has the highest formability and is used for hoods, doors and back panels. This paper describes recent technical trends of auto body panels in relation to the new aluminum alloys of Kobe Steel.
