Polymer matrix composites have been used with great degree of success for decades within the aerospace, maritime, automotive and civil engineering industries. Despite the use of composites over these long periods of time, their use in major structural applications has been limited by problems involved in the current manufacturing techniques and by some inferior mechanical problems. In an attempt to overcome these problems, considerable research effort has been devoted to the development of advanced polymer composites reinforced with three-dimensional (3D) fibre architecture. The manufacturing techniques used to produce 3D textile composites are capable of reducing production costs and have the added benefit of producing components that have improved performance and through-thickness mechanical properties. The 3D woven technique was used for the production of different preforms such as missile fins, fairings, blade stiffed panels, T-joints, different structural sections, and distance fabrics. For these advanced textiles, production of material with a consistent quality must also be demonstrated in a commercial environment. At the moment most of the advanced textile material produced is manufactured in small quantities in a laboratory-type situation. Another significant issue that affects the use of 3D woven composites is not strictly a technical point but more one of perception. The advanced textile production techniques being developed are new to most designers and manufacturers.
