Akzo Nobel, one of the worlds major suppliers of nylon for uncoated airbag fa brics, reports that it is now seriously considering the introduction of nylon 4.6 for this purpose. Airbags are inflated by rapidly responding, semi-explosive pyrotechnic charges which produce very hot gases. As airbag technology advances, there is a suggestion that even higher temperatures may be generated. If this should happen, and it appears highly probable, then existing fibres may well be called into question, according to Akzo Nobel. Nylon 4.6 is a dimensionally stable fibre with a higher heat tolerance than higher nylon 6 or nylon 6.6.
