The Tool Engineering and Manufacturing System (TEAMS) is a knowledge-based CAD system that integrates and automates the Manufacturing Engineering activities associated with composite parts. The system consists of commercially available flat patterning software, in-house developed software, CAD methods, and modeling standards. The system provides for the automation and integration of flat patterns, layup templates, laser projection programming, trim and drill tools, and bond tools. The system significantly reduces cost and cycle time by reducing the Manufacturing Engineering labor associated with composite parts by at least 50%. In addition, the system reduces the number of errors that are common in the manual process and virtually eliminates shop floor development of soft tools.
