The recent developments in steel sheets are described, with an emphasis being placed upon the steel sheets for automobile applications. Based on the history of the development of steel sheets for automobile usages, the process innovations as well as the technology-driven new products will be introduced. Then, the present status and the prospect of utilization of high-strength steel sheets will be described. As for the recent topics of discussion related to this subject, crashworthiness of automobiles will be discussed in terms of high-speed collapse behavior, and environmental considerations will be focused on from the aspect of the new demand for steel sheets. Finally, it is concluded that cooperative simultaneous research conducted by both the steel producer and steel user sides will be the key for developing new ways of practical uses for the new steel products.
