A new drilling initiative has been undertaken to develop a new technology that is safer than conventional technology and is both environment friendly and cost effective. The initiative emphasizes on finding innovative ways to reduce costs dramatically and therefore the economic risk associated with drilling exploration holes. One solution being proposed is the Drilling Independent of Depth (DIODe) concept, which adapts the micro coiled tubing technology for sea-bed drilling. Aimed initially at deeper water operations, a DIODe system will be supported and deployed from a relatively simple surface support vessel that will promote rapid mobilization and demobilization.
