In a modular system where the parts may be rearranged or retrieved to the surface, it is necessary to use a high voltage electrical interface that enables 'wet connection'. This prompted ABB with its subsea separation and injection system to develop the MECON connector. The MECON or marine electra connector introduces a novel concept of full metal encapsulation of the electrical connecting parts, using metal sealing technology to maintain a high integrity seawater barrier. The wet mateable electrical connector system was developed as part of a seabed separation system.
