Deepwater pipelines must be designed to maintain structural integrity during the installation and operational lifetime. The J-lay method is a proven technology and is well suited to the fabrication and installation for very deep water beyond the limit of the conventional S-lay method. During pipeline operations, the bending strain in the pipe sagbend and overbend for all conditions must be less than the allowable specified bending strain. For static analysis, a reduced bending strain is suggested to allow for peak dynamic bending strain. The installation analyses investigated buckling, collapse, longitudinal stress, residual stress, point loads, hydrodynamic loads and installation fatigue under dynamic conditions.
