A study was conducted to gain an insight into the dynamics of rail vehicles in order to guide the development of roller rigs and to establish an analytical framework for the design and interpretation of tests conducted on roller rigs. Parametric study results using a linear model of a freight bogie on a roller rig showed that increasing the roller radius increases the critical speed; increasing the wheel initial cone angle reduces the hunting speed; increasing the roller cant increases the hunting speed; and decrowning of the wheelset on the rollers does not affect the hunting speed but induces longitudinal destabilizing horizontal forces at the contact.
