Driven by the compelling need to reduce cost and improved performance, there is a rapidly rising interest in replacing heavy steel-wire mooring ropes with lightweight and corrosion-free synthetic fiber ropes. Standard polyester (polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) is being considered for this application because of its low stiffness or low density compared with steel.
