The development of the Geomar ocean bottom seismometer has made it possible to upgrade the reliable set of digital ocean bottom hydrophone (OBH) to the observations of three-component experiments. Together with the new marine broadband seismocorder, a tool for recording a wide range of seismic sources from earthquakes to pingers is available. A case study at the Dalrymple Trough demonstrates that with four component recordings, valuable information about shear wave velocities in the subsurface can be constrained better than hitherto possible.
