The Pollution Prevention Act (PPA) of 1990 encourage source reduction as a way of minimizing both the amount of hazardous materials in inventories and the amount of toxic wastes produced. The Navy has established a centrally, managed, centrally funded Pollution Prevention (P2) Equipment Program (PPEP) in order to reduce hazardous material usage and hazardous waste generation while still meeting mission, operations, and maintenance needs, thus meeting the requirements of Executive Orders 12856 and 12873. The PPEP is divided into three branches, including the Competitive Procurement Initiative, the P2 Afloat Program, and the Technology Demonstration initiative. This report presents an overview of the projects that have been and are being prototyped.
