The effective monitoring of oceanic ecosystem dynamics is an important element in predicting global climate change as well as in planning environmental protection initiatives. To rapidly identify and count the zooplankton in the world's oceans, a submersible microscope called a video plankton recorder, together with an image processing system, has been developed. The combination of the submersible microscope with a higher-order local auto-correlation masks has proven to be an effective method for identifying, counting, and sizing zooplankton.
