Today railway companies are preparing very detailed specifications for the noise level and acoustical performance of the passenger rooms. In order to comply with the specifications, a noise level needs to be predicted at the design stage for each type of room of the car. The paper describes the principles used for this prediction, where the noise contribution from every source and the sound radiated from each carbody component can be intentified by means of the program TRANNOISE. Furthermore, the consequences of making design modifications of doors, seats, partitions, gangways and ceilings can be simulated as well.
