A new series of impregnated diamond bits effectively drilled the demanding heterogeneous formations in eastern Venezuela. The innovative bit design was developed and refined to efficiently drill interbedded formations typical to many drilling environments. The diverse demands of a heterogeneous geologic formation can critically limit a drill bit's performance. Historically, the diverse drilling environment of eastern Venezuela has required the use of several different bit types including both PDC and roller cone bits to effectively drill the various formations. The cost of multiple bits and trip time significantly increases drilling costs, especially in these deep wells. A new impregnated diamond bit series was designed to effectively drill both hard, abrasive formations and a variety of softer formations. The bit has proven to achieve higher rates of penetration while extending bit life as it traverses various lithologies. The first bits' performance in Venezuela's Jusepin field in late 1997 indicated significant improvement over comparable bit runs. Second iteration bits with design enhancements were run in the Jusepin and Orocual fields with outstanding performances. Subsequent runs including the 'Longest Impregnated Bit Run in Eastern Venezuela' validate the bits' proficiency at drilling heterogeneous formations while significantly reducing drilling costs.
