The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) plays a major role in maintaining healthy ocean ecosystems, and this was especially evident during the Year of the Ocean in 1998. Aside from protecting the oceans from offshore drilling, the US EPA is also tasked with restoring the nation's fisheries and sustain coastal communities that depend on them. The EPA has several activities underway to enhance protection of the nation's beaches and coastal waters, including the coral reef ecosystems.
